Newcastle v Southampton: Newcastle to win

It has all gone spectacularly downhill for Southampton since beating Liverpool at St Mary’s at the turn of the year.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have now lost four league games on the bounce and lost 9-0 for the second time in two seasons. They need an instant response against Newcastle on Saturday afternoon following that horror show at Old Trafford, but they head to St James’ Park with an injury and suspension-hit squad, making the prospects of an instant turnaround pretty bleak.

Southampton showed resiliency after their 9-0 humiliation against Leicester last season by going to Manchester City and leading until the 70th minute the following week, but it will be difficult to do so this season with just one fit senior centre back.

The Magpies, on the other hand, are not exactly world beaters but can take advantage of Southampton’s vulnerable position to give Steve Bruce a massive victory.

Their surprise win against Newcastle was their only win in their last 11 league games and they have failed to win any of their last five games at St James’ Park in a run stretching back to mid-December.

They have found rediscovered where the back of the net was, however, scoring in each of their last three games after scoring just one goal in their previous six games in the league. They may have just about enough to inflict more misery on a beleaguered Saints side.

Burnley v Brighton: Draw

The only two teams to beat Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League in the last three-and-a-half years meet at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon. Coupled with other results, those shock wins at Anfield have helped both Brighton and Burnley substantially ease their relegation fears.

The Seagulls have now kept four consecutive clean sheets in the league and collected 10 points from their last available 12, while Burnley have also beaten an impressive Aston Villa side in recent weeks to put more distance between themselves and the bottom three.

They have lost each of their last two games, but they were playing against a slick Manchester City and a rejuvenated Chelsea. Sean Dyche’s side boast the worst goalscoring record in the entire division and will struggle against Brighton’s newfound resilience, but they make the most out of the goals they do score and should be able to take a point from Saturday’s game.

Brighton, meanwhile, have beaten Leeds, Liverpool, and Tottenham in recent weeks, but drew with a Fulham side that has not won since November. Graham Potter’s side seem to have more trouble beating the teams directly around them, drawing all five games they have played against the bottom four this season. They may struggle again on Saturday.
