Paddy’s football ambassador Phil Thompson is always available for selection and he’s back in the thick of the midweek action in the Premier League with PPTV. The Liverpool great has run the rule over Manchester United v Southampton and Newcastle v Crystal Palace on Tuesday evening and here’s his best bets for Tuesday’s 8.15pm kick offs.

Manchester United v Southampton

This is one that Manchester United, as we’ve seen with a lot of teams having blips, will want to win. They’ve not won in two and lost to Sheffield United then drew with Arsenal in a really poor game.

They want to get out of that quickly and there’s no better game than playing against Southampton at the moment. They’ve not scored in their last two away games and they’ve lost the last three in the Premier League.

People were talking highly of them about three or four weeks ago but this is a big one for Manchester United to help them get their confidence back. This is a game that they should win but we said that about the Sheffield United game as well.

Tuesday 8.15pm: Manchester United v Southampton
BT Sport 1 and BT Sport Ultimate

They’re unbeaten in their last nine games against Southampton. Everything’s pointing towards a Manchester United win and I’m not going to go another way.

Bruno Fernandes has got to step up to the plate. He’s just been a little bit quiet in his overall play. He generally runs games, in the middle of the park dictating play. I think he’s got to get back to that level.

I know he’s played a lot of games and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is trying to use him sparingly now. But he’s such a big player for them.

THOMMO’S TIPS: I don’t think United will get a clean sheet. I think Southampton have too many dead-ball specialists – James Ward-Prowse in particular. I think United will win 3-1. I think this is a big game for Edinson Cavani. I’ve got Cavani to Score Anytime for Manchester United.

Newcastle v Crystal Palace

Newcastle beating Everton was a shock. Dare I say it, Everton were my NAP last weekend! My goodness, how Newcastle turned up. Maybe they were not as good in the first half but what a second-half performance.

Allan Saint-Maximin is the man. He is the one who they will pin their hopes on. He has to start. Steve Bruce has eased him back in the last few games.

Just as Wilfried Zaha is the match winner for Crystal Palace, Allan Saint-Maximin is the man for Newcastle. Newcastle have a good record against Palace.

Tuesday 8.15pm: Newcastle v Crystal Palace
BT Sport 2

I just feel like they can’t lose the momentum from the weekend and I do expect them to respond against Palace. Having said that, Palace did get a good win against Wolves. Wolves are not the team of the last few years recently, though.

Palace have had three clean sheets in their last five but I just think this is a game that Newcastle have to win.

THOMMO’S TIPS: I think it’s going to be tight. I can’t see it any other way. I’ll go for a tight 2-1 win for Newcastle. I think Callum Wilson will score Anytime.

Thommo’s Tuesday tips

Man Utd v Southampton
Man Utd to Win 3-1
Edinson Cavani to Score Anytime

Newcastle v Crystal Palace
Newcastle to Win 2-1
Callum Wilson to Score Anytime
