Paddy’s football ambassador Phil Thompson has teamed up with PPTV to preview the weekend’s biggest games. The Liverpool legend has bookended Saturday’s action this time with a totally impartial look at Newcastle’s trip to Everton and Southampton hosting Aston Villa in the late game.
12.30pm: Everton v Newcastle
There was as bit of disappointment for Everton the other night in the 1-1 draw with Leicester but, as a Liverpool fan, that suited us just fine. But they’re in a good bit of form, winning five of their last seven in the Premier League. Overall it’s 10 wins from 18 which is something. It tells you a bit that they can turn those draws into wins which, you can look at the likes of Liverpool if you want, they’ve had so many draws on their part.
Saturday 12.30pm: Everton v Newcastle
BT Sport 1 and BT Sport Ultimate
I don’t think you have to be a genius to know that this should be a banker for Everton this weekend. Newcastle are having an absolutely torrid time. They’ve not won in any of their last 11 in all competitions which is just shocking. They’ve lost their last six on the trot, and struggling all-round.
THOMMO’S TIPS: I can’t see anything other than a decent Everton win. I think they way Newcastle are going at the moment they won’t score and I’ll go for a 3-0 Everton Win to be perfectly honest. I think Dominic Calvert-Lewin will score anytime.
8pm: Southampton v Aston Villa
Southampton have been doing OK, I just think they’re just on the wane a little, aren’t they? My good friend Matt Le Tissier and myself we still talk and we have a chat about the Saints. He’s not as buoyant at the moment. They’re having a bit of a hard time and their only win in the last seven was against Liverpool. Did they get a little bit cocky beating Liverpool and think, ‘everything’s been alright’?
This is a little bit of a wobble. Still, they’re not bad at home and have had eight clean sheets out of 11 there. That said Arsenal gave them a bit of a doing over on their own patch last week.
Saturday 8pm: Southampton v Aston Villa
Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League
Villa are a nice, breath of fresh air. How did they get beat 3-2 by Burnley? They were the better team, but Burnley can do that to anybody as we know at Liverpool!
Villa have only had one win in their last five in the Premier League. Their form is not great so it’s who you think might be the one. I’m going to go for Villa, based on that performance against Burnley.
THOMMO’S TIPS: I’m going for Both Teams To Score and Villa to Win with Ollie Watkins to Score Anytime.
Thommo’s Saturday Double
My Saturday double this weekend is Everton – that should be comfortable, that’s my NAP of the day – and Aston Villa both to Win.
