Dean Smith has a bit of a job on his hands here. I don’t mean that in terms of preparing Villa for a relegation scrap or that they’ll be mounting a challenge for Europe.

It’s more to do with the fact that they’ve gone to the Etihad for their first game in a fortnight, outplayed City in spells and come away with nothing because of a set of rules that don’t benefit the sport they’re playing. If Rodri isn’t offside, then every single striker should stands three yards offside when the ball is being pumped back towards goal and nip it off the defender’s toe when his touch isn’t perfect.

As for the handball – I can understand it – but what benefit is there for a defender to get his arm in the way if the effort is clearly going wide and out for a goal kick? Anyway, enough of that.

Luckily for Villa, they’ve got who I consider to be the most toxic club in the Premier League coming to town next, so Newcastle can act as the punching bag for them as they vent their frustrations. And if you need a hand, I’ve got a tasty little Bet Builder for you to boot.

Aston Villa to Win

We should make this very, very clear. Villa have been hard done by this season. Given the run they were on up to Boxing Day, you felt fixtures coming thick and fast could benefit them in a big way because that’s what’s kept so many sides competing at the top half of the table.

The likes of Leicester and Everton have fed off the energy from frequent wins to, time and time again, crank out results they probably wouldn’t if they had time to reflect on it. With Villa’s outbreak, that’s been halted somewhat – and the result at Eastlands is no discredit to them.

I feel like they’re going to strike back with a Villa Win here because they have to, and because Newcastle clearly want Steve Bruce sacked, but that’s another story for another betting market.

Under 2.5 Goals

I don’t believe games with Newcastle merit many goals. I don’t mean that from an analytical perspective or anything to do with their style of play – it’s more a commentary on how little they offer in terms of threat.

Villa will know very early on that they don’t need to produce many goals to win this game because the Magpies will have given up early doors. Teams don’t have urgency when they play Newcastle because they know they’re almost incapable of scoring because they haven’t the desire to win the ball back.

They’ve scored twice since December 16th – one of them was a penalty and the other was via Andy Carroll. It tells you all you need to know. Back Under 2.5 Goals when Newcastle United step onto the field.

Villa to Score in the First Half

Fitness has played into their hands a small bit when it’s come to how many late goals they’ve scored this year, but Smith will know that they’re at their best when they can control the flow of the game.

If you think of their best performances, they’ve come when they’ve hit the ground running and scored early. That was quite a frequent showing earlier in the year and if they’re to be a force they felt they could be back in October, it’s going to be a point of emphasis coming into this tie so don’t be surprised to see Villa Score in the First Half.

Bertrand Traore to Score Anytime

He’s just a difference maker, isn’t he? Villa had a right to be excited by him, but it wasn’t immediately obvious what he’d bring to the Premier League in the early stages.

Well, he’s answered that quite well thus far and he’s generally been the shining light in a couple of disappointing results. But he’s managed to score in three of his four games before the City defeat and I’d expect Bertrand Traore to Score Anytime once more.
