Southampton v Manchester City

All the early bets we’ve seen during the week, two thirds of the bets, have been on Southampton. And when you look at the price on Southampton to win in the 90 minutes, it’s one that you’re thinking is a great bet.

For me, I’d be a bit more cautious. I’d go with the Southampton (+1) in the handicap. The reason being, if you remember when they lost 9-0 to Leicester, the two next games were against Man City – one in the league and one in the cup.

They put in solid performances but lost both games, 3-1 and 2-1, but they were as good as you could hope to be against Man City. City still dominated the games but Southampton put in good performances.

Southampton, in hindsight, were right to back Ralph Hasenhuttl and stick with him. He looked like a dead duck with two games against City after a 9-0 beating against Leicester, but he’s turned it around fantastically.

Southampton (+1)

In the four games against Man City since Hasenhuttl took over, they’ve scored in each of them. If Southampton do score this weekend against Man City, you think Southampton (+1) is a great bet to be on. I’d be quite happy to side with Southampton in the positive markets for this game.

In terms of a goal scorer, it’s really interesting with Sergio Aguero coming back from injury for Man City. The problem for Man City is that this season they’ve scored less than half the goals they had at the same stage last year.

The concern is, it’s not that they’re missing chances, they’re not creating as many chances. Riyad Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne were their two main creators last season, but their third main creator was David Silva who’s obviously now gone back to Spain.

Mahrez and De Bruyne, their creativity is down this season as well. Man City just aren’t scoring enough goals. If you look at their last two games, they’ve drawn five of them and four of them have ended 1-1 as well.

Jannik Vestergaard to Score Anytime

So, for me, based on what I’ve said about Southampton and how they’re likely to score a goal based on the games against Man City under Hasenhuttl, you could look at Danny Ings. I would avoid James Ward-Prowse because Ings will be on penalties now he’s back in the team. But, the one I’m really sweet on is Jannik Vestergaard to Score Anytime.

He’s an absolute giant, just under two meters, he’s a real threat at set pieces and has scored three goals already this season. Back in the Bundesliga in 2017 he was the most prolific defender in the league. We know Man City have troubles defensively, though Ruben Dias has helped that, but for me Vestergaard is a massive threat and he’s the one I will be backing as an anytime goal scorer.
