Mikel Arteta explains interview walk-out: ‘I left the oven on’

Mikel Arteta walked out of his post-match interview on Sky Sports after he suddenly remembered he'd left the oven on

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has explained why he walked out of an interview with Sky Sports following a frustrating 1-1 draw at Manchester United.

Declan Rice’s strike rescued a point at Old Trafford but did little to help their pursuit of Liverpool who are now 15 points clear, having played a game more.

The Gunners boss made a noticeably early exit from an interview with Patrick Davison when asked if side were too far behind in the title race.

Many assumed Arteta was irritated by the line of questioning, but the Spaniard has since clarified the situation.

‘I’d left the oven on’, Arteta told Paddy Power News.

‘A Dr Oetker Ristorante Pepperoni Pesto was burnt to a crisp, which is a shame because they are delicious.

‘You have to ask yourself why Dr Oetker even bothered going to medical school when he could make such wonderful pizzas?

‘I would have loved nothing more than to answer Patrick’s questions about Arsenal bottling yet another title race but then I remembered the pizza and had to dash’.

And Paddy Power News asked the 42-year-old to confirm whether he believed Arsenal were out of the title race, he said:

‘I’m sorry. I just remembered I have to put another pound in the parking meter’.

In related news, TV presenter and Arsenal fan Piers Morgan has shown solidarity with Arteta over his behaviour.

‘My thoughts and prayers go out to Mikel at this difficult time’, Morgan told Paddy Power News.

‘If anyone knows what it’s like to storm off on live television when faced with an uncomfortable line of questioning, it’s me.

‘Just ask my former colleagues at Good Morning Britain’.

When asked which striker he felt the club should have signed in January, the former Daily Mirror editor told us:

‘Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s my friend, you know?’
