The new Champions League format has divided fans and pundits – but it’s teed up a blockbuster final day of the league phase.

Just nine of the 36 teams involved in the competition head into the last round of group fixtures having already been eliminated from proceedings

The top eight in the standings after Wednesday’s action will sail through to the last-16 stage, while the teams ranked ninth to 24th will battle it out over two legs in the knockout round play-offs.

Liverpool’s perfect record of seven wins means they avoid having two extra fixtures added to their jam-packed schedule, while Arsenal, Aston Villa and Celtic are also in contention for automatic progression.

Manchester City are the team with the most to worry about, however, as they are facing the prospect of an early exit after failing to win their last four Champions League games.
