Joe Cole: Man Utd need change and Gareth Southgate can steady the ship

Sorry Erik... time's up.

Erik ten Hag Joe Cole

It looks like the writing’s on the wall for Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. The Dutch boss saw his side put in a dismal display on Sunday as they lost 3-0 to Tottenham with captain Bruno Fernandes sent off in the process.

It felt like Ten Hag was on life support towards the end of last season, but the shock 2-1 FA Cup Final win over Manchester City kept him alive and he even signed a new deal in the summer.

But the side look rudderless once again and three time Premier League winner and Paddy ambassador Joe Cole thinks the club needs a freshen up.

Ten Hag can leave with head held high

It’s a tough part of our job because Erik ten Hag always comes over to speak to us on TNT Sport and he’s always very respectful and he doesn’t shy away from the tough questions but, ultimately, it’s just not happening, it it?

If he walks away from Manchester United in the next few months he goes with his head held high. He’s won silverware and is part of the club’s history.

The players look like they need a new voice around them. It’s really tough but I’m only going on what I see, how the players are reacting.

They look lost

It’s hard because, ultimately, somebody’s team has to be doing badly and it’s Erik ten Hag’s team. He’s got a fantastic job, a tough job, he’s a nice guy, but I just think it may have run its course.

Man Utd’s situation like England’s before Southgate

I think Gareth Southgate’s the obvious choice. You look at the ownership group and he worked with Dan Ashworth at the FA.

It’s actually reminded me a lot of when he took over at England in terms of steadying the ship. The fans weren’t happy and he managed to galvanise England.

It might be the right place at the right time for Gareth. I hate talking about the next manager when the current manager is still in place but it’s really tough to look at Manchester United and, knowing how football is, to think they’re not thinking about doing something.

He’s a top manager, he’ll walk away with silverware and he’ll get another job that might suit his style better.
