Ruud Van Nistelrooy
As part of a show of faith in ten Hag ahead of the 2024/25 season, the club backed his move to make club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy his new No. 2.
If Ten Hag is under pressure and Ruud is not too busy being the best finisher in training, the former striker will be in the running to make the easy transition to head honcho in Manchester.
Gareth Southgate
Ex-England manager Gareth Southgate is looking for his next challenge after stepping down from the job after the Three Lions’ defeat in the Euro 2024 final. He’s got friends in high places at Old Trafford and is friendly with the likes of Dave Brailsford.
The former defender could be looking at a Premier League job despite being linked to a UEFA role, and the Old Trafford hot seat could be tempting.
Thomas Tuchel
With Mauricio Pochettino taking charge of the USA national team, another former Chelsea manager has emerged as an option: Thomas Tuchel. He left Bayern Munich this summer after a disastrous league campaign that saw them finish third behind the unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen and even Stuttgart.
Man United might be interested in his availability as he has Premier League experience and is a Champions League-winning manager.
However, he’s set to take a break after a tricky time at Bayern rather than throw himself back into the bear pit.
Kieran McKenna
Could Northern Ireland’s Kieran McKenna be the man for the job even though he just signed a contract extension at Ipswich?
His stock is high after he secured back-to-back promotions with the Tractor Boys, taking them from League One to the Premier League. Playing a 4-2-3-1 system brought him plenty of success, which would suit the young United players.
McKenna knows the club well, too, having worked there from 2016 to 2021, going from coaching the Under 18s to working as part of the first-team coaching staff under Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.
He will want to try for Premier League survival with Ipswich, but their season will impact his interest in a return to Manchester.
Graham Potter
The former Chelsea and Brighton boss has adopted the mantra of patience as he bides his time before taking on his next managerial role. After being let go from Stamford Bridge in April 2023, Graham Potter has been linked with several jobs across Europe, but none have yet to tempt Potter back into the hot seat.
However, a call for the big job at Old Trafford might be the exact role he has been waiting for. If he doesn’t get a better offer before ten Hag departs, then Potter’s name will undoubtedly be mentioned as an option.
Roberto De Zerbi
The former Brighton boss is out in Ligue 1, trying to lead Marseille back to their former greatness.
If the Italian succeeds in France, he could become a leading candidate to return to the Premier League as United’s boss.
