Defiant Scotland boss Steve Clarke says he’s confident his squad can go unbeaten for a month despite their recent dismal form.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s late Nations League winner broke Scottish hearts in Lisbon after they took a shock lead thanks to a Scott McTominay header.
The 2-1 defeat means Scotland are now on the worst run in their history, having won just one of their last 14 games, a friendly against Poundland over a year ago.
However, with Scotland’s next fixture against Croatia not until October 12th, Clarke is quietly confident his side could go unbeaten for a month.
‘With the right attitude, a bit of luck and provided the SFA don’t do something stupid like arrange a friendly before the Croatia game, this Scotland team could go undefeated for a month’, the 61-year-old told Paddy Power News.
‘That’s the type of run these lads are capable of putting together and I’m 99% sure they’ll do it’.
Clarke remains upbeat despite Scotland’s poor run of results and is trying to focus on the positives.
‘If you ignore the individual errors, all the stats and the results, there are some positives to take away from the performances.
‘I mean, we’ve managed to keep the scoring down to 4 or 5 goals against the big teams. That’s progress, eh?’
Meanwhile, Scott McTominay has revealed the secret behind his excellent performances at international level.
The midfielder headed home his 10th Scotland goal in his past 12 caps and says his remarkable form is down to one simple thing.
‘Not playing for Man United’, explained the 27-year-old.
‘It’s hard to put your finger on why players excel with their national sides or with other clubs but play like arthritic goats with United.
‘Maybe it’s the Glazers’ fault? Maybe it’s the leaky Old Trafford roof? Maybe it’s because Paul Pogba’s brother hired a witchdoctor to put a curse on the club? We can’t be certain.
‘But what we can be certain of is that United are sh*te. Arrivederci, pal’, he laughed.
