Just like a nerd in one of those American high school films, the Champions League has been given a makeover.
Whereas the geek’s transformation is often much needed, changes to football’s premier club competition are probably not.
We’ve got more teams – upped to 36 from 32 – and a lot more matches because a league phase replaces the group stage.
The lucky clubs taking part in the new-look tournament will play eight matches in the league – the top eight will progress to the last 16, those ranked ninth to 24th will enter the play-offs and finishing 25th or lower will result in an early exit.
Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa will fly the flag for the Premier League, while Celtic are Scotland’s sole representatives after Rangers failed to make an impact in qualifying.
