Premier League new rules for 2024/25
VAR hasn’t been short of controversy and it returns this season but with a few tweaks. There will be a big push on video officials to only intervene with the on-field decision if the referee has made a clear and obvious error. Communications will improve too with disallowed goals shown on stadium screens.
There have been a few law changes regarding handball. It will now only be a yellow card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity with a handball that isn’t considered deliberate. Referees will also be instructed to consider context on handball offences, including a player’s proximity to a ball, whether they are using their arm to support the body when falling and if the ball is deflected onto their arm.
For penalties, players will only be penalised for encroachment into the box if it has a significant impact on the taking of the penalty rather than every time it occurs.
The first new rule involves substitutes. Now that teams are permitted to make five changes per game, the number of substitutes allowed to warm up at the same time on the perimeter of the pitch during a match will be increased from three to five.
As with last season, there will be a multi-ball system in place, with 15 balls used to help speed up the game. Previously, when a ball had gone out of play and was not retrievable, a player had to collect a replacement from the nearest cone and could not receive one from a ball assistant. Starting from this season an exception will be made for ball assistants placed behind the goal to return a ball to the goalkeeper.
The final rule change for the 2024/25 season involves stoppage time. When a goal is scored, match officials will only start to add time onto the end of the match when the delay between the goal and the subsequent kick-off is longer than 30 seconds. It’s hoped this will reduce the length of stoppage time.
