Does the Community Shield count as a major trophy?

The real debate...

Ah, the Community Shield. The match that holds a special place in all our hearts as the unofficial start of the season.

That is, of course, only if you support one of the two teams taking part in the Wembley exhibition – and ignore the fact that the EFL is up and running and the Scottish Premiership got underway last weekend.

There is silverware on offer in the form of the titular shield instead of a classic trophy design… but does it count as a major title? That’s the big question.

Because the only group of people that really care about the Community Shield are fans of the teams involved in the match – the winners of last season’s Premier League and FA Cup – then they will either say yes or no.

Yes if their team wins the match or no if their team loses.

Google isn’t much help because it’s auto-generated answer pulled from other websites simply states: “The FA Community Shield is a trophy.”

Fantastic insight.

The fact that the Community Shield is a one-off match featuring half-cooked players still working off the excesses of their holidays in Ibiza and Dubai means it’s hard to take seriously.

If offered the choice between the Carabao Cup and the Community Shield, every football fan would plump for the former, despite it also being the subject to criticism and occasional bit of mockery.

But it doesn’t really matter if the Community Shield is seen as a major trophy because the revenue generated by the match is donated to charities, community groups and grassroots football clubs.

And that’s the real victory.

Community Shield winners

Lifting the Community Shield does not guarantee Premier League success, in fact there’s a bit of a curse because just one of the last 10 winners of the trophy have become champions of England later that season.
