Does the Community Shield go to extra time and a penalty shootout?

What happens if it ends all-square?

Community Shield

If you’re a Manchester City or Manchester United fan then this weekend is all about the Community Shield.

It’s often seen as the curtain-raiser for a new season, with the Premier League champions taking on the FA Cup winners.

Of course, competitive football is already underway. The Scottish Premiership and EFL seasons are up and running by the time the Community Shield kicks off, but eyes will be on Wembley.

City are participating in their fourth consecutive Community Shield and are yet to win any of them, which is good news for their arch-rivals.

United got the better of Pep Guardiola’s men back in May, denying them the double with a shock 2-1 win in the FA Cup final.

That saved manager Erik Ten Hag’s job, and there’s expectation for more trophies this season. So, whether you count it or not, winning here would be a statement victory for the Dutchman.

Players usually aren’t fully up to speed as the Community Shield is little more than a glorified exhibition, so don’t be surprised if it ends as a draw because four of the last seven editions have been stalemates.

You can find all the Community Shield odds on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise, here’s everything you need to know about the format if it’s all-square after 90 minutes.

Does the Community Shield go to extra time?

The Community Shield is different from a normal Premier League or cup game because it takes place at a neutral venue – Wembley Stadium – and managers are allowed to make up to six substitutions rather than the usual five.

If the scores are level after 90 minutes then the match will go straight to penalties, with no extra time played.

Community shield date

The match between Manchester United and Manchester City will take place on Saturday, August 10.
