Antonio Rudiger and Fabian Schar have been voted Scotland’s best players of Euro 2024 after they exited the tournament in dramatic fashion.
Steve Clarke’s side crashed out of the Euros following a late 1-0 defeat at the hands of Hungary finishing bottom of their group in the process.
The Scots then held their end-of-tournament awards do in their team hotel after the game where Rudiger and Schar were voted joint-winners of the player of the tournament by staff and fellow players.
Rudiger scored a bullet header during a 5-1 defeat against hosts Germany while Schar’s deflected effort against Switzerland earned Scotland their solitary point in Group A.
The goals left the pair as Scotland’s joint all-time European Championship goalscorers alongside the likes of Ally McCoist and Paul McStay.
Accepting his award via video link from Germany’s team hotel, an emotional Rudiger said: “Fitba, bloody hell.
“Ah cannae believe it, man.
“I wan tae thank mah mither ‘n’ faither and the tartan airmie who am sure wull be getting blootered the night.”
While choking back tears in his room in the Swiss team hotel, Schar dedicated the award to some Scottish heroes of his.
“This one is for Sean Connery, Super Gran and woman who screamed ‘Dis-gust-iiiiiiiiin’ after her daughters used the loo,” he said.
Meanwhile, Scotland boss Clarke burst into an expletive laden tirade when invited to say a few words near the end of the awards ceremony.
“It’s sh*te being Scottish. We’re the lowest of the low,” yelled Clarke before being dragged off the stage by his staff.
While being escorted back to his hotel room, onlookers claim the 60-year-old former Kilmarnock manager continued to rant about being colonized by the English and the futility of fresh air in rectifying the situation.
