The 5 costliest Super Subs that smashed Paddy’s traders this season

PP trader Jason Murphy takes a dive through the numbers.

With Euro 2024 bolting up over the horizon like Erling Haaland advancing on goal, we’ve dug out the five times our trading team took a beating this season thanks to our new Super Sub offer.

Don’t know what we’re rabbiting on about? Well, Super Sub means that if a player you’ve had a punt on is taken off, your bet transfers across to their replacement, keeping your bet alive for longer and potentially turning it into a winner.

For example, England are cruising to victory against Serbia and all your Bet Builder legs are winners bar Harry Kane who has not had a shot on target yet. Then Gareth Southgate decides to give him a rest and Ollie Watkins a run. No need to panic! That bet placed on the Bayern striker transfers to Watkins instead, and should he have a shot on target, then your Kane leg is settled as a winner.

So even if your selection leaves the game, you’re still in the game. Bosh.

Here’s our Top 5, which thanks to Super Sub, led to payouts of over £1 million in winnings to Paddy Power punters… and that’s not even mentioning the other 550 odd players across several competitions that Super Sub has led to payouts on.

11th March, Chelsea v Newcastle – Bruno Guimaraes

Subbed in the 81st minute for Joe White
Super Sub Legs that Won: 2 (To be Booked, to Score or to be Shown a Card)

Nearly any football punter putting Bruno Guimaraes in their Bet Builder is backing him to be Shown a Card. He’s a player that’s rarely substituted. Out of 37 Premier League starts this season, he was only subbed off six times. However, on this occasion, he, and Newcastle, were not playing well.

Plenty were waiting on him in their last leg, and thought it was coming with Newcastle 3-1 down and growing frustrated… but then Guimaraes was hooked off for Joe White in the 81st minute. Although any Bet Builders would normally be dead, thanks to Super Sub the bet was still alive.

And with over six minutes of injury time played, Toon youngster White got himself booked in the 96th minute to turn all those Bet Builders into last-minute winners.

17th March, Man Utd v Liverpool – Rasmus Hojlund

Subbed in the 71st minute for Antony
Super Sub Legs that Won: 5 (to have 1 or more Shots On Target, to Score, to Score or Assist, to Score or be shown a Card, Next Goalscorer)

It was looking like a miserable St. Paddy’s Day for Man Utd fans and Rasmus Hojlund backers when he was subbed off after 71 minutes. The Red Devils were losing to their bitter rivals and the sight of Antony coming on probably didn’t inspire much hope.

A lot of Bet Builders were in good shape at that stage, though, with Both Teams to Score and Over 2.5 Goals landing and three cards already given out.

Many were waiting on a Hojlund Shot on Target to land a winner, and thanks to Antony’s right foot, which United fans had previously only ever seen used for standing, he hit the target late on to keep United in the FA Cup, which, like the many Bet Builders waiting on Hojlund, they eventually won.

9th April, Arsenal v Bayern Munich – Kai Havertz

Subbed at 86th minute for Thomas Partey
Super Sub Legs that Won: 2 (to be shown a Card, to Score or be shown a Card)

Massive Champions League nights have seen their fair share of Super Subs over the years. In fact, some bloke named Ole springs to mind…

Arsenal equalised at 2-2 with 15 minutes to go against Bayern, but those who backed Kai Havertz to be Carded would have been distraught at the sight of Mikel Arteta shutting up shop by bringing on Thomas Partey to replace him with five minutes to go.

Again, loads of promising Bet Builders were in great positions thanks to Bukayo Saka and Harry Kane already scoring, and there’d been four goals, and a couple of cards, already.

In a previous life all those bets would have been losers, but thanks to Super Sub there was still reason to keep believing,, and sure enough the Ghananian fouled his way into the referees notebook in the 89th minute to leave happy punters Partey-ing like it’s 1999… (I’ll get my coat).

22nd May, Atalanta v Leverkusen – Exequiel Palacios

Subbed in the 68th minute for Robert Andrich
Super Sub Legs that Won: 3 (to commit 1 or more Fouls, to be shown a Card, to Score or be shown a Card)

For many this will be forever known as the Ademola Lookman final, for many others, particularly Paddy Power punters, it will be known as the Robert Andrich final.

After replacing Exequiel Palacios in the 68th minute, he proceeded to get booked for unsportsmanlike conduct just five minutes later, and thanks to Super Sub, turned a substantial number of winning Bet Builders into big payouts.

11th March, Chelsea v Newcastle – Anthony Gordon

Subbed in the 36th minute for Jacob Murphy
Super Sub Legs that Won: 4 (to have 1 or more Shots On Target, to Score, to Score or Assist, to Score or be Shown a Card)

Now, no one likes to see a player going off injured and particularly so early in the game. However, thanks to Super Sub bets were kept alive and after Jacob Murphy scored late in the second half, many Bet Builders were paid out in full as a result.

The keen-eyed amongst you will have noticed we already had a massive Super Sub winner in the same game with Joe White getting carded in place of Bruno Guimaraes. Our Super Sub offer applies to multiple players within the same game, and can really make the difference between getting as much entertainment from you bet as possible, and still having a chance of it winning.
