Can Scotland pull off a huge upset?

Germany v Scotland Euro 2024

Euro 2024 kicks off this evening when Germany take on Scotland in the tournament’s opening game at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

The hosts are seen as one of the favourites for the trophy and will be backed by strong support throughout. They must first progress from Group A and they are joined by Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland.

While Germany are expected to top the group and ease into the Round of 16, second place is very much up for grabs and Scotland will fancy their chances.

Steve Clarke’s men will have to perform at their best if they are to reach the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time, but with the best third-placed teams also earning a spot it increases their chances.

The Tartan Army have the privilege of being involved in the first match and facing the group favourites first could benefit them.

Germany v Scotland team news

Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann was forced into a late change to his squad after Bayern Munich midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic was ruled out through tonsillitis.

Borussia Dortmund’s Emre Can has taken his place in the squad, but Bayer Leverkusen’s Robert Andrich and Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos are expected to form the engine room.

As for Scotland, Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson is likely to feature despite being forced out of training on Monday with a minor ankle problem.

Manchester United ace Scott McTominay is likely to partner Brighton’s Billy Gilmour in midfield despite limited game time in recent friendlies due to a knock.

Predicted Germany XI: Neuer; Kimmich, Tah, Rudiger, Mittelstadt; Kroos, Andrich; Musiala, Gundogan, Wirtz; Havertz

Predicted Scotland XI: Gunn; Hendry, Hanley, Tierney; Ralston, McTominay, Gilmour, Robertson; McGinn, Christie; Adams

Germany v Scotland prediction

Phil Thompson: The public will be expectant of a result and that could make Germany a little nervous in this game.

Scotland aren’t coming into this in good health, they’ve only got one win over their last nine matches and that was beating Gibraltar 0-2, but they will defend well.

Steve Clarke knows how to set his team up to hit Germany on the counter-attack and he will be looking to use set plays where he can try to hurt the opposition.

Despite those nerves for Germany, I do still expect them to get a win on opening night, and they are always a threat at major tournaments despite being disappointing in the last few.

They have always got a chance in everything that they do. They’re unbeaten over their last four, winning three of them and one was against France.

Germany will be under pressure but I expect them to start the tournament with a victory. I’m going for Germany to win this one 2-1 in Munich and get off to a winning start at Euro 2024.
