Despite spending well over £1 billion in the transfer market, Chelsea haven’t made significant progress under the Argentine’s leadership, and a failure to secure European football could spell the end of his tenure in charge. So let’s look at the likely Next Chelsea Manager contenders and whether they want to be the next ring leader at the circus.
Hansi Flick
Former Bayern Munich and Germany national team boss Hansi Flick is available and he’s said to be keen on working outside of Germany.
A return to Bayern could be on the cards this summer but maybe Chelsea will make a move to try and tempt the 59-year-old to Stamford Bridge?
He won the lot at Bayern including the Champions League in 2020 – he could be a smart appointment.
Julian Nagelsmann
The current manager of Germany looked to be the favourite to take the reigns in West London last summer after his spell in charge of Bayern Munich was cut short. But things went in a different direction.
With his post-Euro 2024 future up in the air, the young manager could bring his meticulous brand of football to Stamford Bridge. If the Blues were to change leaders in the summer, the in-demand Nagelsmann would be high on their list. However, with several clubs looking for new managers, and Chelsea becoming a less appealing destination by the day, he will be tough to obtain.
Roberto De Zerbi
Since Todd Boehly’s takeover Chelsea have developed a fondness for taking assets from Brighton, and the current Seagulls boss could follow in the footsteps of predecessor Graham Potter and jump ship to West London.
It looks incredibly likely that the Italian will leave Brighton at the end of the season, and with Chelsea’s links to the club, they could be his next destination. The jury’s out on whether all Blues fans would welcome another acquisition from the South Coast with open arms.
Jose Mourinho
The twice-former Chelsea manager has been out of work since being relieved of his duties at Roma back in March. Despite winning the club’s first European trophy in 2022, the relationship between Mourinho and I Giallorossi had soured.
A section of Chelsea fans would gladly welcome the return of their most successful manager, just to feel something again. Yet, another section believes that a third spell would only fuel an already raging fire. Whether Mourinho would get a tune out of the Blues’ young side is hard to predict, but it would certainly provide the masses with some entertainment.
Michel Sanchez
The current Girona boss is the left-field pick amongst the candidates for the next Chelsea manager. The Spaniard has guided the relative minnows to Champions League football for the first time this season. Would he be the right man to return Chelsea to the Premier League top table?
