Scenes of jubilation are continuing on Merseyside after lowly Liverpool defied all the odds with a shock 1-0 Carabao Cup final win over Chelsea at Wembley on Sunday.
The Reds went into the game against 11th place Chelsea as huge underdogs yet pulled off what must be considered one of the greatest cup upsets in the history of the game.
Despite Chelsea’s team boasting the likes of £106.8 million midfielder Enzo Fernández, Liverpool somehow managed to steal the victory thanks to a goal from the little-known £75m Dutchman Virgil van Dijk.
‘It just shows that football isn’t all about money’, said Sky pundit Jamie Carragher soon after the one-time world’s most expensive defender scored his injury-time header.
While Chelsea’s star-studded squad was assembled for over a billion pounds, Jurgen Klopp has had to work with a shoestring budget of £670m.
‘What happened here was absolutely insane. Liverpool beat Chelsea in a game of football. These things are not possible’, Klopp told Paddy Power News after the game.
‘The average age of our team at the final whistle was 22. Chelsea’s was 23. It was literally men against boys out there’.
‘In my 20 years, this is easily the most special trophy. Although, when United won it last year we said it was a Mickey Mouse cup. What a difference 12 months can make’.
The German reserved special praise for who he considered to be Liverpool’s star performer on the day.
‘We couldn’t have won it without Conor Gallagher. Missed three absolute sitters. BOOM’, laughed the 56-year-old.
Meanwhile, Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino believes his side can bounce back from their Wembley heartache ahead of talks with owner Todd Boehly.
‘I think if we keep working hard in training, have the right attitude and spend another billion pounds in the summer transfer window, we could be pushing for 9th place next season’.
