After plenty of thrills and spills, we’ve reached the business stage of the competition to decide the champions of Africa.
The latest edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, one of the greatest international tournaments on the planet, started in the Ivory Coast on Thursday, January 11 with the host nation beating Guinea-Bissau by two goals to nil.
Only two of the 24 teams taking part in the tournament could book a place in the final, although reigning champions Senegal will not be involved as their title defence came to an early conclusion with a last-16 defeat to the hosts.
It has been a tournament of shocks as 2019 winners Algeria and Ghana failed to escape their groups, while a Mohamed Salah-less Egypt and 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco exited in the round of 16.
Nigeria, however, are looking good to deliver on their promise after getting the better of South Africa to seal their place in the final, while the hosts’ capped off their rollercoaster tournament by beating DR Congo to reach the showpiece.
