England fans have, on the whole, been pretty pleased with the Three Lions’ progress under Gareth Southgate. Heartbreak at the 2018 World Cup when losing in the semi-finals was followed by a penalty shootout defeat against Italy in the Euro 2020 final.
Even though most England supporters still aren’t over that summer night at Wembley, the Three Lions have been much easier to get behind in recent years than days gone by.
However, following their quarter-final exit at the hands of France in Qatar and ongoing question marks over his squad selection, is the end of the line approaching for Southgate? The former defender dropped a major pre-tournament hint that Euro 2024 is likely to be his last hurrah – but what comes next?
Bowing out after this summer’s Euros could be the perfect time for a fresh start, so here’s the latest odds on who’s near the top of the next England manager betting.

Eddie Howe
Eddie Howe was linked with every job going before taking over at Newcastle. The former Bournemouth boss has done a fine job at St James’ Park after guiding the Magpies back to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years in 2023. But with the Magpies’ form dipping last season, question marks could be raised over his long-term future at St James’ Park.
Pep Guardiola
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is reportedly on the FA’s shortlist of potential successors to Gareth Southgate and it would certainly prove a popular appointment with England fans. He is under contract at the Etihad Stadium until 2025, however, and is unlikely to quit the club for international football a year early.
Graham Potter
Former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter is biding his time for the right job as he bids to rebuild his reputation after a wretched spell at Stamford Bridge. He earned plenty of plaudits for his fine work at Brighton and his easy-on-the-eye style of play could prove popular with FA bigwigs.
Lee Carsley
Lee Carsley is a manager on the rise after guiding England’s Under-21s to the European Under-21 Championships in the summer, while getting his crop playing an attractive brand of football. An in-house appointment could prove attractive to the FA after Southgate’s success.
Mauricio Pochettino
How about a touch of South American flair? Mauricio Pochettino is a free agent after leaving Chelsea at the end of the 2023/24 campaign despite getting a tune out of their expensively-assembled squad in the final months. Could the former Tottenham and PSG boss be available this summer?
Steven Gerrard
Oh Stevie, where did it all go wrong? The Liverpool legend made an impressive start to life as a manager with Rangers but things quickly turned sour at Aston Villa before heading to moneybags Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq. He racked up 114 caps for the Three Lions and would surely jump at the chance to take the England job.
Steve Cooper
There’s no doubt Steve Cooper was under pressure to perform at Nottingham Forest after the Tricky Trees splurged £1.7bn on 3,428 new players ahead of the 2022/23 season – but he delivered to keep the club in the Premier League. He has since been axed by Forest but he has experience in the FA set up, just like Southgate did before he took the reins.
Thomas Tuchel
The final name on the list has experience of English football after a rollercoaster ride at Chelsea. Thomas Tuchel is back in the running, after leaving Bayern Munich, on the back of failing to secure a trophy-laden campaign.
