Premier League predictions: Arsenal NOT title contenders, two other sides stronger – Saha

Former Premier League hitman Louis Saha talks Arsenal's title hopes and potential transfer business.

Former Everton, Manchester United, Tottenham and France forward Louis Saha doesn’t think Arsenal have what it takes to have a lasting impact on the title race.

Arsenal were something of a surprise last season and topped the table for much of the campaign, only to be reeled in and overtaken by Manchester City on route to their historic treble.

But while Saha acknowledges the Gunners’ first-XI quality, he doesn’t think their long hunt for a Premier League title will end this year because others simply have more depth.

“The title race is still between Manchester City and Liverpool,” he told Paddy Power News. “I’m very confident in that. Arsenal can be a contender and a threat, as we saw last year.

“I respect the way they play, but they don’t have the stamina for the season. They don’t have the balance and they’ve only got one or two dimensions, unlike City and Liverpool.

“To be a favourite for the title, you have to have won it in the last few years, which City and Liverpool have done. When the two of them find that consistency, it’s going to be really hard for the rest of the league.”

One man who has been heavily linked with a move to The Emirates to bolster their squad in January is Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

Arsenal have Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah as their attacking options through the middle, but Toney would provide a different profile and a high quality option for Mikel Arteta.

And Saha, who scored 85 Premier League goals and set up another 20 in just under 300 appearances in England, thinks Toney would be a good fit for Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta

“Ivan Toney and [Aston Villa midfielder] Douglas Luiz would be great signings for Arsenal as they’re looking to build a squad to win the Premier League,” he continued.

“They need signings like them because their bench is sometimes a little bit light.

“We saw it last year; things went well at the start of the season and then they had a couple of injuries and that’s the nature of the Premier League.

“I can see Arsenal going for Toney and Luiz, but especially Toney. He’ll come back with loads of motivation and excitement.

“It’ll be like he’s starting his career again and he’d be a really good signing for Arsenal.
