Phil Thompson: I’m still angry about Liverpool VAR chaos – we need to hear audio

Paddy Power ambassador Phil Thompson is not a happy bunny.

I was so angry and I still am after the weekend, as a Liverpool fan and as a football fan.

This is happening too often this season. You’d expect Howard Webb the head of the PGMOL to come out maybe once a season to say ‘yeah we’re sorry, we’ve got this one wrong’.

But it’s been four or five times already this season he’s had to admit that this season which is wrong. It happened to Brighton a couple times in one game!

This ‘Human Error’ line they come out with – we need to know more, we need transparency. We need to hear the audio of what’s gone on. We’re on Twitter or X now massively debating how the officials have come to this conclusion.

Liverpool have come out with this statement and it’s quite hard-hitting because they’re talking about integrity, and that is wrong. For the PGMOL to say it was human error is not good enough.

The VAR officials have been suspended. Are they still getting paid? Are they just paying them lip-service?

I’m still so upset by it all. The naked eye could tell you that their decision was wrong. What they’re saying now is ,”oh VAR thought the goal had been given”.

Well, you don’t take kick-off with most of the Spurs players in the Liverpool half, and the ball 10 yards outside of the center circle! There was just so much wrong about it.

We all start to get a devious mind – and the cynic in me starts working overtime.

I’ve never been an advocate of it from the beginning.

VAR was to come in to help us to get more decisions right. Have football fans ever argued more since VAR has come in?

We accepted human error side without VAR, with marginal offside calls. That was part of the game.

We didn’t moan or argue as much as we have with VAR.

Too many referees make decisions now because they think that their decisions will be rectified by officials in Stockley Park and they aren’t being.

We can’t celebrate goals any more because we’re nervous has something happened in the build-up.

That’s not the way we love the game. Why people pay hard earned money to go and watch the game.

I would be in favour of taking it out.
