Newcastle are back in the Champions League after a 20-year absence… but who could the Magpies face in the group stage?
The Toon Army will discover their fate when UEFA bigwigs pluck the balls from the transparent bowls at 5pm on Thursday, August 31 at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.
The lack of continental action at St James’ Park means Newcastle will have to settle for a place in Pot 4 so Eddie Howe’s men are likely to be handed some big beasts in their group.
The latest Champions League odds are on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise everything Newcastle fans need to know about their prospects in the group-stage draw can be found below.
Champions League pots
Pot 1: Man City, Sevilla, FC Barcelona, Napoli, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Feyenoord
Pot 2: Real Madrid, Man Utd, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, RB Leipzig, Porto, Arsenal
Pot 3: Shakhtar Donetsk, Red Bull Salzburg, AC Milan, Braga, PSV Eindhoven, Lazio, Red Star Belgrade, FC Copenhagen
Pot 4: Youngs Boys, Newcastle United, Union Berlin, Lens, Real Sociedad, Celtic, Galatasaray, Antwerp
Who could Newcastle face in the Champions League group stage?
Newcastle cannot face a fellow Premier League side in the Champions League group stage so a potential meeting with Arsenal, Manchester City or Manchester United is off the table until later in the competition.
There are seven possible sides the Magpies could face from Pot 1 and you would imagine they would prefer to be paired with the likes of Benfica or Feyenoord as opposed to your Barcelonas or Bayern Munichs.
Eddie Howe’s side could be drawn alongside six of the eight teams in Pot 2 while all eight teams in Pot 3 are potential opponents.
