Manchester United qualified for this season’s Champions League after Erik ten Hag guided the club to a third-place Premier League finish in his maiden year in the Old Trafford dugout.
It has been a challenging start to the current campaign for the Red Devils, however, and Ten Hag will no doubt be hoping for a kind draw when UEFA bigwigs conduct the group-stage draw at 5pm on Thursday, August 31 at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.
United, who have been placed in Pot 2 alongside Premier League rivals Arsenal and some of the continent’s biggest clubs, last won the Champions League in 2008 and they head into the latest edition among the outsiders for the crown.
The latest Champions League odds are on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise everything Manchester United fans need to know about their prospects in the group-stage draw can be found below.
Champions League pots
Pot 1: Man City, Sevilla, FC Barcelona, Napoli, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Feyenoord
Pot 2: Real Madrid, Man Utd, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, RB Leipzig, Porto, Arsenal
Pot 3: Shakhtar Donetsk, Red Bull Salzburg, AC Milan, Braga, PSV Eindhoven, Lazio, Red Star Belgrade, FC Copenhagen
Pot 4: Youngs Boys, Newcastle United, Union Berlin, Lens, Real Sociedad, Celtic, Galatasaray, Antwerp
Who could Man Utd face in the Champions League group stage?
Manchester United cannot face a fellow Premier League side in the Champions League group stage so a potential meeting with Arsenal, Manchester City or Newcastle United is off the table until later in the competition.
There are seven possible sides the Red Devils could face from Pot 1 and you would imagine they would prefer to be paired with the likes of Benfica or Feyenoord as opposed to sides such as Barcelona or Bayern Munich.
Erik ten Hag’s side could be drawn alongside any of the eight teams in Pot 3 while Newcastle’s presence in Pot 4 means there are seven potential opponents from there.
