Man Utd eyeing Hojlund transfer but his goal return isn’t great – Phil Thompson

Man United need more goals, Phil tells us where they should be looking to get more.

Manchester United’s Dutch manager Erik ten Hag brought in Dutch international Wout Weghorst to help the Red Devils in the goals department last season.

It didn’t exactly go to plan however. He scored one goal, in the League Cup, against Nottingham Forest. So he’s had to sling his hook. Thankfully, for United, Marcus Rashford took up the slack and had the season of his life, scoring 30 goals in 56 appearances across all competitions.

Ten Hag has been busy in the transfer market, taking Mason Mount from Chelsea, Andre Onana in for the departing David de Gea between the sticks and Jonny Evans has returned to Old Traffford as well. But his team still needs goals, Phil Thompson gives us the lowdown on Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund who they are rumoured to be targeting, whether he’ll be the right man and who they could potentially get instead.

Over the last few seasons Atalanta have made great strides, they’ve been competing with the big boys in the Serie A; AC Milan, Inter and Juventus.

And with Napoli winning the title last season we’ve seen the big teams all getting knocked off their pedestals.

Rasmus Hojlund has only been playing with Atalanta for 12 months and he only scored nine goals in 32 Serie A appearances, which isn’t a great return.

Erik ten Hag probably sees a lot in him because there’s a lot of interest from Manchester United.

Would it be a good fit?

I think they do need a change at centre forward and I think there are players around who would have the goals in them that United need. Nine in 32 is not a great return but he’s one of the few players around who is available.

I saw Victor Osimhen play for Napoli against Liverpool last September when the Reds lost 4-1. My goodness, he was quick.

He was direct and he looked very good and I don’t know if other teams have been interested in signing him.

I think Man United were linked with him previously but he’d certainly been an interesting signing.
