Thommo: Liverpool need a defender and I’d have Mane back… on one condition

Liverpool legend and Paddy ambassador Phil Thompson talks the Reds' transfer plans this summer.

Sadio Mane, Bayern Munich

If you look at it, Liverpool have Luiz Diaz, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo up front. We’ve still got a good set of attackers and we’re blessed in that department.

You’ve also got to factor in that Gakpo and Nunez will be better for having that first season under their belt. Jota’s got goals in him but had injury problems last year.

I don’t think there will be movement up front in terms of incomings. I think the most likely area for improvement might be a central defender.

We’ve got Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk. That’s a nice four, but Matip and Gomez are always picking up injuries so I’d want another centre back. There could also be another midfielder coming in because we were so light there last year.

Sadio Still The Mane For Me

One forward I would want is Sadio Mane. Hopefully he didn’t sully the waters at Anfield when he left. Philippe Coutinho didn’t hit it off at Barcelona when he left and there was talk, could he come back?

I spoke to some of the hierarchy at Liverpool at the time and they said, ‘It will never happen.’ So he must have done something really bad. I know he refused to play, but Sadio Mane didn’t do any of that.

Did Mane try to force through a deal to leave? I would like to think not because he was a good sort.

I would absolutely take him back

It’s only been 12 months since Sadio left and if the opportunity was there I would not pass it up, depending on the price.

I’d have taken Mount at Anfield

Liverpool were long thought of as being Mason Mount’s potential destination and I thought, ‘Yeah, I like that.’ As with Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, there’s goals there.

Mason Mount has that in his locker as well as the high press. He can play in a few positions across that midfield or as a No.10.

Manchester United probably paid a little bit over the odds for someone who only had 12 months remaining on his contract, but they’ve got themselves a fine player.

Bruno Fernandes hasn’t been scoring as many goals as he has done of late, maybe Mason Mount can make up for it.
