Next Manchester United manager odds: Who could replace Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford?

It's all gone Pete Tong at Old Trafford. Again.

Erik Ten Hag

After turning around their fortunes last season with, erm, a Carabao Cup trophy and a top-four finish, the wheels look to have come off for Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

United have been knocked out of the Champions League and their form wasn’t even good enough to drop down into the Europa League. Whoops!

The Red Devils, who were dumped out of this term’s League Cup by Newcastle in an embarrassing 3-0 loss at Old Trafford, are also outside the top four in the Premier League, however, with last Sunday’s 2-2 draw at home to Tottenham leaving them at least three wins off Champions League qualification.

Ten Hag will, at least, be happy that his side avoided an FA Cup banana skin at League One Wigan to progress to round four – but will he still be in a job by then?

With the pressure mounting on the not-so-flying Dutchman, we’ve asked our traders to look into the next Manchester United manager odds for who could replace him.

Here’s the latest runners and riders.

Graham Potter Chelsea

Graham Potter

Graham Potter only lasted six months at Chelsea following his move from Brighton and his reputation will have taken a hit as a result. However, the Stamford Bridge side were a bit of a basket case and it felt like more players arrived than the club scored goals in that time.

Julen Lopetegui

Former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui left Molineux earlier this year and he’s looking for his next role. It’s claimed he’s still living in Wolverhampton, therefore hinting he’s keen on another Premier League job.

He’s managed Real Madrid and the Spain national side so he’s been in charge during pressure situations – is he the right man for United?

Roberto De Zerbi

Roberto De Zerbi has done a fantastic job at Brighton, with his side landing a spot in Europe. The Italian has been linked with numerous clubs around Europe, with De his stock rising since he took over at Brighton. Could the Seagulls fend off interest from big suitors? Or will De Zerbi jump ship like Graham Potter?

Ruben Amorim

Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim is also on the list to take over at Old Trafford.

The 38-year-old has masterminded Sporting wins over English sides in Europe and his stock as a young boss is high.

Amorim led Lisbon-based club to their first title in just under 20 years during his first full season in charge. Could he do the same at Old Trafford?

Xabi Alonso

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has transformed Bayer Leverkusen’s fortunes after taking the reins in October 2022.

The Spaniard could be the man to revive the Old Trafford club, but would his Anfield links and reluctance to walk away from the Bundesliga title fight prove a problem?

Unai Emery

Another Spaniard that has turned a club around in less than two seasons, Unai Emery took Aston Villa from the relegation scrap to Europa Conference League qualification last term and they are among the top-four hopes this season.

He struggled at Arsenal, however, and could be unwilling to ditch a Premier League rival on the rise.

Hansi Flick

If Old Trafford’s top brass fancy appointing a manager that is available to start work straight away then former Germany boss Hansi Flick is free.

Despite things going sour with the national team, Flick led Bayern Munich to a treble including the Champions League in 2019/20.

Zinedine Zidane

More of an ego manager than a football manager. Zinedine Zidane feels like the boss level Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and had great success at Real Madrid. He was less effective in his second stint there but could do well with United’s bottomless resources and star names. He might be holding out for the France national team or the PSG job, though.

Diego Simeone

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone seems like a permanent fixture in the Spanish capital and it’s hard to imagine him prowling any other touchline in his trademark black suit. However, there are consistent rumours of his possible exit and he features prominently on Paddy’s traders’ long list to take on a new challenge.

Michael Carrick

Former United midfielder Michael Carrick has enjoyed a short spell in the hot seat at Old Trafford and he’s gone on to do a great job at Middlesbrough in the Championship. Well, mostly. He would be a popular appointment with the Old Trafford faithful but could it come too soon?

Julian Nagelsmann

Julian Nagelsmann was axed by Bayern Munich earlier this year and replaced by Thomas Tuchel. He’s now the manager of the German national team, but would that stop him double-jobbing in Manchester?

He’s a young and progressive manager but is that what United need? Or do the Old Trafford hierarchy want a manager that can win silverware now?
