Is it finally Lionel Messi’s time to shine? Or will Kylian Mbappe guide France to a consecutive World Cup triumph?
Ahead of the semi-final showdowns, Paddy Power has all you need to know about the World Cup yellow card and suspension rules.
World Cup yellow card and suspension rules
We’ve seen it plenty of times in the past where a player has missed a crucial game after accumulating too many yellow cards at a tournament.
For the group stages in Qatar, a player would miss his team’s next match if he was shown a yellow card in two separate matches.
The tally was carried over from the group stage, meaning a player could have missed their quarter-final clash due to a booking picked up in the Round of 16.
It was also the case for the quarter-finals into the semi-finals as Argentina’s Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel know too well, with the pair sidelined after receiving their second bookings of the tournament against the Netherlands.
Morocco’s Walid Cheddira will also miss their semi-final against France after being sent off following two yellows against Portugal.
However, yellow cards will not be carried over from the quarter-finals to the semi-finals.
Therefore, a booking in a semi-final will not result in a suspension ahead of the big one on Sunday.
The only way a player can be suspended for the World Cup final is if they’re sent off in the semi-finals on Tuesday and Wednesday night.
