France’s bid to retain the World Cup is set to come under serious scrutiny from England on Saturday evening.

Hugo Lloris is nailed on to start between the sticks. In front of him, Jules Kounde appears to have the edge over Benjamin Pavard at right-back while Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane is set to partner Dayot Upamecano at the heart of the defence. Theo Hernandez will continue at left-back in the absence of his brother, Lucas, who suffered a serious knee injury in the opener against Australia.

Aurelien Tchouameni and Adrien Rabiot have established themselves as the preferred pairing in the engine room after Youssouf Fofana and Jordan Veretout disappointed when Deschamps made sweeping changes against Tunisia.

Kylian Mbappe missed a training session on Tuesday but is expected to start on the left wing, Ousmane Dembele will take his usual place on the opposite flank, while Antoine Griezmann has caused mischief for opposition defences in the no.10 role.

Olivier Giroud netted the opener against Poland to overtake Thierry Henry as France’s all-time leading goalscorer and the former Arsenal and Chelsea ace will lead the line against England.
