The World Cup is creeping ever closer which means the tedious pub debates about who will make the England squad are almost over.
The Three Lions may be towards the head of Paddy Power’s outright World Cup betting market, but they head to Qatar in wretched form and with mounting injury concerns.
It doesn’t take a genius to realise that’s less than ideal.
Gareth Southgate has a deep pool of talent to choose from, however, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben White, James Maddison, Jason Sancho and Marcus Rashford all uncertain of a spot on the plane.
It helps that FIFA have permitted squad sizes to rise from 23 players to 26 so Southgate can squeeze a few more into the mix.
NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?
The England manager submitted a provisional squad of 55 players by Friday, October 21 with the likes of Brighton pair Lewis Dunk and Danny Welbeck among the surprise names on the longlist.
The all-important final squad has to be submitted by Monday, November 14, with Southgate making an announcement on the lucky players that have made the cut at 2pm on Thursday, November 10.
Any injury or coronavirus replacements can be made until 24 hours before a team’s first match in the tournament.
With the last round of Premier League fixtures before the winter break taking place on the weekend of November 12/13, England will have no time to squeeze in a friendly before their first World Cup fixture against Iran on Monday, November 21.
