Scotland have received universal praise for their decision to boycott the 2022 FIFA World Cup in protest against human rights conditions in the host country, Qatar.
Steve Clarke’s side publicly announced their decision to withdraw from the tournament by refusing to turn up for Wednesday night’s World Cup qualifier against Ukraine at Hampden.
In doing so, the Scots also gave the beleaguered Ukrainian people something to celebrate amid their ongoing war with Russia.
‘Aye, all things considered, Qatar’s appalling human rights record and our even more appalling record at major tournaments, it’s best we give this one a miss’, an SFA spokesperson told Paddy Power News.
‘When you look at it, we’re sparing the Tartan Army the expense and the indignity of flying halfway across the world to see us exit at the group stages after drawing 0-0 with Panama’.
‘Plus, we’ll deny those English b***ards another opportunity to post those wee M&M advert ‘Scot’s home early’ memes on Twitter’.
NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?
It’s understood Scotland skipper Andy Robertson was instrumental in the decision to no-show for the game against the Ukrainians as it allowed the full-back to re-join Liverpool’s end-of-season piss up.
‘To tell you the truth I forgot all about the World Cup qualifier’, hiccupped the 28-year-old.
‘I’m on my way back to Bobby Firmino’s gaff to fill the League Cup with Buckfast wine’.
‘Boycotting Qatar is the right thing to do. I’d also call on my Scotland teammates to boycott Dry January and Sober October as well’.
Special praise was reserved for midfielder John McGinn who received a Robert Burns Humanitarian Award for missing an open goal from six yards with the score line delicately poised.
Meanwhile, players of the Italian national team who decided to boycott the Qatar World Cup back in March welcomed the move.
‘The abuse of human rights in Qatar is something we feel very strongly about. That is why we boycotted the 2022 World Cup too’, said left back Leonardo Bonucci.
