New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will be keen to make numerous changes at Old Trafford this summer in hope of making the Red Devils Premier League title challengers once again.
One big decision the Dutchman needs to make is whether to keep Cristiano Ronaldo at the club. The 37-year-old, who netted 28 Premier League goals this season, is out of contract in 2023 but there’s doubts over whether the Portuguese star is helping United kick on and challenge Manchester City and Liverpool.
Ronaldo started his career at Sporting Lisbon before United signed him for the first time in 2003. It seems inevitable that Ronaldo will end his career at Sporting but could it happen this summer if he’s given the boot by new United manager Ten Hag?
Ronaldo has long been compared to his rival Lionel Messi, who quit Barcelona for PSG last summer, but imagine them in the same team. Dreamy. PSG have given Kylian Mbappe the keys to Paris after he snubbed a move to Real Madrid but the French giants would find it hard to turn down a move for Ronaldo if he became available.
Real Madrid did the Champions League and La Liga double this season so could they celebrate by bringing Ronaldo back to the Bernabeu? It seems like a thing Real president Florentino Perez would do. Ronaldo scored more goals than he did have games for Real and he’s their all-time leading scorer. Can they say no to him?
Manchester City made a move for Ronaldo before he opted to return to Old Trafford last summer. It would have been good to see Ronaldo at the Etihad under Pep Guardiola if for nothing more than the red half of Manchester going into meltdown. Ronaldo snubbed City in favour of United last year, but would he do it again if the opportunity came up this summer?
It seems Bayern Munich are about to lose their talisman Robert Lewandowski as he looks for other ‘challenges’. So why not swap one goal machine for another? Ronaldo would be guaranteed to win the Bundesliga title next season at Bayern and they’ll probably have it wrapped up by Christmas. It seems a lot easier than trying to catch City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal etc. in the Premier League…
Ronaldo netted almost a goal a game during his spell at Juventus but he didn’t really seem that appreciated by the Italian giants. Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri sold Ronaldo last year and it seems unlikely the pair would have a reunion.
