For most people, January 31 is just another day to tell yourself your New Year diet will start tomorrow after sacking it off for the last four weeks. Perhaps it’s even the chance to celebrate the last day of dry January.
However, for football fans, it’s all about one thing: Transfer Deadline Day.
Who will Newcastle panic buy? Will Jesse Lingard ever be allowed to leave Manchester United? How many more players will Arsenal sell before they’re down to just 11?
Jim White has been synonymous with the big day and we’ve watched him on our screens for over 20 years. The yellow tie, receiving texts live on air to drop a transfer bombshell and plenty of attention to a 10-foot clock just in case we forgot when the window ‘slams’ shut.
And we also can’t forget his chats with fellow Deadline Day stalwart Harry Redknapp, who was usually hanging out of a car window.
However, now Jim is no longer breaking stories on the tellybox, he’s turned his attention from footballers worth millions of pounds to more pressing matters… such as whether Wendy will snub an offer from Tesco to stay at Sainsbury’s.
Talks are ongoing but as Jim will tell you, the clock is ticking…
