Following Manchester United’s hard-fought draw away at league leaders Chelsea, United Technical Director Darren Fletcher has been accused of acting as a middle-man during the clash, with a number of people suggesting he was on the phone to the German for the entire 90 minutes, passing advice and instructions onto the players.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
Sporting an earpiece and seen frequently talking out loud to absolutely nobody, Fletcher was initially accused of ordering his evening takeaway while the game was underway, with one TV viewer adamant he could lip read the former United midfielder saying, “one chicken tikka masala, sag aloo and four poppadoms please boss”.
Paddy Power News managed to grab a word with Fletcher who offered to clear up any confusion.
“I did put an order in at Bombay Spice around the 75th minute for collection on the final whistle because I just wanted to beat the crowds, but I promise I didn’t speak to Ralf at any point,” confirmed Fletcher.
“I was actually listening to music for most of the match. Did you know the Crazy Frog is making a Christmas comeback? This is exactly what the country needs after the pressures of lockdown and COVID. We had it on in the dressing room before the game and look what happened, we got a well-deserved point away at the league leaders.
“There were times during that match where I had absolutely no idea what was happening on the pitch as I was too blown away by how good that tune really is. 17 years on and it’s still as fresh as ever! I love the bit where he shouts, ‘ding ding’.
A confused Chelsea season ticket holder who thought he’d heard Fletcher say “move to three in the middle and press higher, got it boss” was actually mistaken, as what Fletcher actually said was “Ring ding ding daa baa Baa aramba baa bom baa barooumba”.
When asked by Paddy Power News what he thought of the appointment of Rangnick and if the German could change the fortunes of Manchester United, the former Scotland international was extremely complimentary.
“Rangnick obviously knows his stuff. Apparently, he’s influenced pretty much every person in the world in one way or another at some point in their life. I was told the President of the United States, the Body Coach Joe Wicks and the Kardashians all say he shaped their careers in one way or another. I wonder if he likes the Crazy Frog?”
