It’s finally all over for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United after the Norwegian was sacked as the club’s manager. The Red Devils splashed the cash over the summer to bring in Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo but the new signings only seem to have made things worse on the pitch.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
The writing was on the wall for Solskjaer as United were humiliated by Liverpool on their own turf thanks to a crushing 5-0 loss in the Premier League, took at 2-0 thrashing from Man City – no striker, innit – and were then pulled apart by The Tinkerman and his jolly Watford army in a stinging 4-1 battering.
- United have turned to Ralf to un-wreck it but he’s only a short-term measure. Here’s who might replace him as the Next Permanent Manchester United manager.
The heady days of 2018 and endless renditions of ‘Ole’s At The Wheel’ seem a long time ago now, so here at Paddy Power we have gathered together the most likely options as to who will replace Solskjaer in a handy Next Man Utd manager odds market.
Zinedine Zidane
More of an ego manager than a football manager. Zinedine Zidane feels like the boss-level Solskjaer and had great success at Real Madrid. He was less successful in his last stint there but he could do well with United’s bottomless resources and star names.
Michael Carrick
Michael Carrick was Solskjaer’s assistant during his reign and will step up to help run the team following his former boss’ dismissal. Another United great, could The Red Devils be tempted to make the same mistake again? He’s one win from one game so far after the 2-0 success at Villarreal in the Champions League…
Ralf Rangnick
The supposed ‘father of gegenpressing’ has inspired the likes of Jurgen Klopp, but last managed two years ago at RB Leipzig. At 63, he’s got plenty of experience under his belt, although none in the Premier League. Fun fact: He turned out for Sussex non-league side Southwick while an exchange student at university in Brighton.
Brendan Rodgers
This would be a tasty one, former Liverpool and Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers might be running out of steam at Leicester. He gets his sides playing great football and they almost always overachieve. The polar opposite of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, then. How would the United faithful react to an ex-Kopite running their club?
Darren Fletcher
Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher is currently operating as The Red Devils’ technical director. The Scot is joining Michael Carrick in helping to try and steady the ship while a permanent successor to Solskjaer is found.
Erik Ten Hag
Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag features prominently in the betting after doing a brilliant job with the Dutch giants since 2017. A proper manager with a plan and tactics, it would be interesting to see how the Dutchman deals with United’s star-studded squad.
Mauricio Pochettino
Unsurprisingly, the former Tottenham boss and all-around dreamboat Mauricio Pochettino features highly on our list. The Argentine has been widely tipped to join Manchester United at various points throughout his career and speculation reached boiling point when he was dismissed as Spurs manager. He’s since moved to Paris St-Germain but that doesn’t quite feel like the right fit.
Julian Nagelsmann
Sharply-dressed skateboarder and some-time Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann would surely relish the chance to go up against Pep Guardiola in a fashion face-off. He easily outsmarted Solskjaer in the Champions League in 2020/21 and is clearly a talented operator, even if he is a bit of an odd one.
Gareth Southgate
England boss Gareth Southgate has firmly built a reputation as the ultimate nearly man following semi-final and final failures with the Three Lions in the last two major tournaments. Some England fans grumble about his negative style but he’s shown no sign of leaving his post anytime soon.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Give it Cristiano! Yes, that’s right, Mr do-it-all Cristiano Ronaldo features prominently on this list to be the next Manchester United manager. It looks like he’s running everything on and off the pitch so why not eh?
