Rangers are on the hunt to find Steven Gerrard’s replacement after the 41-year-old swapped Ibrox for Aston Villa. The Midlands club chose the Liverpool hero to replace Dean Smith at Villa Park after his surprise sacking.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

Gerrard guided Rangers to the Scottish Premiership last season, denying rivals Celtic from winning 10 titles in a row. The Liverpool icon will be missed at Ibrox, but who could replace him? Our Paddy Power traders have gathered together the most likely contenders with our Next Rangers manager odds.

Ronald Koeman

Giovanni van Bronckhorst

Ex-Rangers star Giovanni van Bronckhorst is available after a spell at the Chinese Super League side Guangzhou City last year. Van Bronckhorst impressed during his four years in charge of Feyenoord prior to that but is he the right man to steady the ship following Gerrard’s exit?

Ronald Koeman

Former Everton and Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman is on the market after getting the boot at the Catalan giants earlier this season. He boasts a wealth of experience but hasn’t been able to put it to good use in his last few jobs.

Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard has been out of work since his beloved Chelsea axed him earlier this year. However, Rangers could be the ideal opportunity for the 43-year-old to prove his worth as a manager. He could use his contacts at Chelsea to get some of their youngsters on loan too.

Derek McInnes

Derek McInnes was tipped to join Rangers in 2017, however, a deal didn’t materialise. He remained at Aberdeen but left earlier this year after eight impressive years at the club. McInnes did a solid job and guided Aberdeen to four second-place finishes. Maybe now is the right time for McInnes to head to Ibrox.

Kjetil Knutsen

This is the fella that was in charge of Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, who beat Jose Mourinho’s Roma 6-1 in the Europa Conference League last month. If anyone claims they’ve heard of him before that, they’re lying.

John Terry

Former Aston Villa assistant manager John Terry has publicly spoken about his desire to be a head coach. However, is now the time for Rangers to take a punt on the Chelsea hero?

Gary McAllister

Gary McAllister has been Gerrard’s assistant manager since heading to Ibrox in 2018. However, Gerrard is expected to take McAllister, and the rest of his backroom staff, to Villa Park with him. It’s also worth noting that McAllister had a spell as Aston Villa caretaker manager back in 2011 so he might be keen to return.

Michael Beale

Like McAllister, Rangers first-team coach Michael Beale is expected to head to Villa with Gerrard. However, there have been calls for the former Liverpool academy coach to step up and replace Gerrard in the hot seat. Beale already knows the players and the club well so it could be a smart move.

Russell Martin

Russell Martin is currently in charge of Swansea after beginning his managerial career with MK Dons. Martin had a spell on loan at Ibrox in 2018 towards the end of his playing career so he understands the club.

Alex Neil

Alex Neil has been out of work since leaving Preston earlier this year. The 40-year-old did well at Hamilton Academical and was snapped up by Norwich City, where he guided the Canaries to the Premier League. Neil had a decent spell at Preston but left by mutual consent in March.
