After being two up and seemingly cruising at home to Brighton in the Premier League last weekend, The Reds suffered a shock turnaround as Brighton scored either side of the break to snatch an unlikely draw from Anfield. But, they need to put that disappointment to bed as they know a win over Atletico Madrid will guarantee qualification to the next round of the Champions League.
Ahead of the huge clash we’ve grabbed Reds legend and Paddy Power ambassador Phil Thompson to give us his tidy tips for the game. He’s joined by our football trader Jason Murphy as they pour over all the beautiful bets you’ll need for Wednesday’s big one!
Wednesday 8pm: Liverpool v Atletico Madrid
TV: BT Sport 2
THOMMO
This is set up to be another one of those great Anfield nights, but Atletico Madrid would love to spoil the party. It will be hard for Liverpool, however, Atletico are without Antoine Griezmann and that is a huge boost for Jurgen Klopp.
Luis Suarez will likely start up top for Atletico and he’ll be desperate to get a goal at Anfield, especially given his history at the club. Liverpool will be coming into this one looking for the win. I know a draw would be a solid result, but they need a victory to top the group. Atletico are always tough, but I’m going for Liverpool to Win 3-1.
I also like the bet on Mohamed Salah to Score Anytime. He’s been phenomenal for Liverpool this season and I expect his fine form to continue on Wednesday night.
JASON MURPHY
This is quite a tough game to call. I’m not tempted to back Liverpool at their current price. After all, The Reds only got the win in the game in Spain because of the red card and the penalty.
Luis Suarez started for Atletico against Real Betis at the weekend, so I don’t expect him to start at Anfield. They will likely try to hit Liverpool on the break and Suarez doesn’t have the pace to do that.
I reckon Joao Felix and Angel Correa will start up top. They’re both fast forwards and they will cause Jurgen Klopp’s men problems. They’re big prices to be the first goalscorer and, if they both start up front, I’ll bet on the pair of them to score first and hope one of them lands!
