Newcastle United have confirmed that Steve Bruce will take charge of the team on an interim basis against Tottenham Hotspur, Paddy Power News understands.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
The Tyneside club are expected to bring in one of the world’s top managers – or Frank Lampard – to replace Steve Bruce following a takeover by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund last week.
However, with so much in flux, a steady pair of hands is required to guide the club, and while they search for a contact number for Frank Lampard, caretaker manager Steve Bruce will guide the first-team as they get used to life without free Dunlop tennis balls or Lonsdale trackies now Mike Ashley’s sold the club.
“Look, it’s a big change,” Steve Bruce said in his Friday press conference. “Steve did the best he could here, but it didn’t work out and me and the lads will have to do the best we can until the new gaffer comes in.”
Uncertainty about Bruce’s future has swirled around the club all week, but a statement on Friday morning clarified that Bruce would be the manager for Sunday afternoon’s game – unless Pep, Zizou or some other big-name says they’ll take it, then he’ll be out faster than you can say “Is that a f**king cabbage?!”
The Magpies are currently 19th in the Premier League and without a win all season, but that is sure to change once they bring in a proven winner – or Frank Lampard – as manager, and, with a big investment expected in January’s transfer window, fan hopes are already sky-high.
“I’ll be gutted if we don’t sign Ronaldo, Messi, Ibra, Mbappe and Neymar in January tbh” wrote @ToonVoice on Twitter earlier this week, while reports that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already booked four train tickets for January 1st to Newcastle in the names of J Lingard, A Martial, D Van de Beek and P Jones have yet to be confirmed.
However, Bruce maintains an upbeat mood despite the lack of clarity over his long-term future.
“I’m just delighted to get another opportunity to prove I’m the man to take a vastly more expensive and talented squad to 37 or 38 points and the 17th place trophy in the Premier League.
“Look at Ole – we’ve seen it before where a caretaker comes in and end up getting the job full-time,” he continued, as Amanda Staveley grimaced and shook her head alongside him.
