The Saudi-led consortium poised to take control of Newcastle United have vowed to bring Toon legends Kevin Keegan and the Honey Monster back to St James’ Park, Paddy Power News understands.
With a deal between the consortium, the Premier League and Newcastle expected to be announced later today, the new owner’s No1 priority will be to lure the large, hairy cereal mascot and his former boss back to the North East.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
Few goals will live longer in the Toon Army’s memory than the Honey Monster’s last-minute back-post header at Wembley back in 1996.
The goal sparked wild celebrations with Keegan high-fiving the yellow behemoth as he bounded his way along the touchline.
However, the joy was short-lived as both their Newcastle careers took a downward trajectory following the Wembley showpiece.
Keegan resigned just a few months later having blown a 12-point lead over title rivals Manchester United. While the Honey Monster made the switch to Old Trafford, making a memorable scorpion-kick save during a Champions League game after coming on as a substitute for the injured Peter Schmeichel.
The club’s new owners believe the pair are the ones to restore Newcastle to their former glory of throwing away seemingly unassailable leads.
