Last Sunday morning most have felt really sweet for a Paddy Power customer who hails from Birmingham, as they woke up to a wonderful win that has to be seen to be believed. Our victor placed a six-fold accumulator on Saturday’s Major League Soccer games (which took place in the early hours of Sunday morning UK time) that not only required correct predictions on the result of the matches, but also needed both teams to score in them too.
The bonkers bet saw our winner net a tidy windfall of £5,907 off only a £1 stake, beating off odds of 5,906/1 to come in. We are not sure if our customer managed to stay up to watch the matches, but there was loads of drama Stateside along the way. Let’s tell you how the loot was landed.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
Our journey starts at Gillette Stadium, with one of three 1am kick-offs, as Eastern Conference leaders New England Revolution took on FC Cincinnati. The Revs justified their pre-match favourites tag (and our punter’s pick) and flew out to a 3-0 lead with first-half goals from Tajon Buchanan, Emmanuel Boateng and Adam Buksa. That was before Brenner pulled one back for Cincinnati – giving our winner the required goal from the opposition to bring up both teams to score – nine minutes into the second period. But, Buksa grabbed his brace in the 61st minute, and New England Revolution put themselves 15 points clear in the standings with a 4-1 win.
We travelled down the east coast next as Inter Miami – part-owned by David Beckham – took on Toronto FC at DRV PNK Stadium. Again, the home side went up 3-0 in the contest, with Rodolfo Pizarro netting goals either side of half-time and they were added to by Robbie Robinson’s first-half strike. But, our victor must have been delighted to see former Arsenal man Kieran Gibbs put through his own net in the 62nd minute as it got Toronto on the scoreboard. However, Inter Miami ran out 3-1 winners on the night, to make our customer two-from-two.
Next, we get to some of the drama, as our winner was made to sweat on the result of Philadelphia Union and Montreal Impact. The Canadians hit the front thanks to a smart piece of poaching from Djordje Mihailovic in first-half stoppage time, and it stayed 1-0 to the visitors until late on in the second half as our customer hoped for a score draw in the game. Hopefully, those prayers were answered by Union’s Quinn Sullivan with just three minutes to go, as he smashed the ball home from the edge of the area to end the game level at 1-1.
We had a pair of matches at 2am, and thankfully they both went our victor’s way. Firstly, Colorado Rapids were the selection against Real Salt Lake at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. They did their job with a 2-1 victory, as Diego Rubio and Mark-Antony Kaye found the net for the home side with Albert Rusnak getting the selection over the line by bagging for Salt Lake. Secondly, Atlanta United held up their end of the bargain with a 2-1 away success against DC United.
That left just one game – kicking off at 3am – on the chopping block and boy, our winner must have had the nails chewed off because of this one. Vancouver Whitecaps were the selection as they hosted Los Angeles FC at BC Place. It all looked to be going wrong when the visiting team took the lead on the stroke of half-time through a Diego Rossi penalty.
Brian White answered in the 60th minute for the Whitecaps, but the minutes started to drain away and all must have seemed lost for our punter as the watch ticked to 90 seconds to go. Luckily, former Dundee United and Sporting Lisbon sensation Ryan Gauld had other ideas and popped up with an 89th-minute header to not only seal the win for the Canadian outfit, but bring home the bacon for our victor as well.
With that result the cash was winging its way to Birmingham. The bet truly was an awesome accumulator and it’s a Hall Of Fame worthy punt in our book. Congrats to our winner, enjoy it!
