Clever correct calls sees London Paddy Power punter net £5k from just a £5 stake

Our winner needed a little late goal action to bring the bet home.

While the world has been distracted with the Olympic games over the past few weeks, one punter from London was busy putting a Punting Hall Of Fame gold medal over his head last weekend. That’s because our customer went and landed an awesome accumulator on Saturday’s football that really has to be seen to believed.

Our victor – who hails from the Wembley area of the UK’s capital city – beat off odds of 1,140/1 on what was a fantastic correct score four-fold on games in the Belgian and Romanian leagues, as well as two friendly matches last weekend. There were some familiar names to Premier League fans involved in it all, as our winner grabbed a tidy windfall of £5,704 off a stake of only £5. The stuff of Saturday acca dreams eh?

Our punter had to rely on a bit of late luck for the bet to land, but let’s tell you how the cash was claimed.

We start our jaunt across Europe in the east, as our victor predicted a 1-0 win for Romanian powerhouses CFR Cluj over Chindiu Targoviste in domestic action. Cluj duly delivered as veteran striker Denis Alibec slid in to finish a low cross in the 52nd minute for the home outfit. It was a lead Cluj would neither relinquish or add to (much to our customer’s relief) and it took them to top spot after just three games played.

Next was a trip to Belgium’s top tier, as our winner was seeking a 1-1 draw between Eupen and a Vincent Kompany-led Anderlecht side. Kompany’s boys hit the front in the 39th minute as Benito Raman channelled his inner David Nugent and stole a goal from his teammate Francis Amuzu, shamelessly tapping in a ball that was already going in on the goal line.

But, there was disappointment to come for the Manchester City legend as Eupen hit back in stoppage time at the end of the half. Jens Cools secured a point for the home team as he nodded in a rebound from a fine save from the Anderlecht keeper. The result leaves Kompany with a bit of managerial work to do, as Anderlecht sit on just one point in the table with the season two games old.

Now we get to the drama, because next on our victor’s betslip was the meeting of AC Monza and Juventus in a friendly at the Brianteo Stadium, and a 2-1 win for the away side was needed to keep the ball rolling. Juve had some Euro 2020 stars back in their line-up – including Aaron Ramsey, Matthijs de Ligt and Adrien Rabiot – but, they were given a test by the Serie B side. Filippo Ranocchia had the visitors in front after 13 minutes with a fine curling effort from the edge of the box and that was added to by Dejan Kulusevski 40 minutes later after he sized on a defensive mix-up from Monza.

With three minutes to go our punter must have been sweating, as a goal from the home team was still needed. Thankfully, Marco D’Alessandro answered those prayers when he pounced on a nod back across the box to sweetly smack in with a side-foot volley.

Lastly, we moved onto France as Marseille squared off with Europa League holders Villarreal, and it proved to be an unusually fiery affair. Our customer was looking for a 2-1 home win to land the loot and hopes of that were boosted as a crazy own-goal from Fer Nino gifted the French side an early advantage in the 10th minute. But, things looked bleak for the prediction when ex-Tottenham defender Juan Foyth was harshly sent off four minutes into the second half.

Marseille attacked in waves following that dismissal and were soon two in front as Dimitri Payet (yes, he of West Hame fame) smartly made it 2-0 in the 58th minute with a classy finish. As Marseille battered the Villarreal goal repeatedly after that, all hope must have seemed lost for our punter. But, of all people, ex-Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno wandered forward for the Spanish outfit and with just two minutes left on the watch, buried a low drive past the Marseille netminder to send our winner into dreamland!

With that a tasty prize of £5,704 was winging its way to Wembley and all we can do is say, ‘well played and enjoy the winnings!’
