Spare a thought for Gareth Southgate who is about to do the most difficult part of his job – writing a bunch of names on a piece of paper. Let’s hope he uses a pencil and has an eraser at hand because he’s got plenty of selection dilemmas.

If we’re being honest, it would be easier for UEFA to just admit defeat with their Euro 2020 branding and start calling it Euro 2021. Hell, if they’re allowing the squad size to increase to 26 players in case of positive coronavirus tests then they can at least acknowledge this tournament is 12 months late.

Yes, Southgate has the luxury of naming three more players than the standard 23-man party but the English will still hold their collective breathe to find out who has made the cut.

With Euro 2020 now less than two weeks away, it really is time for the England manager to get cracking…

When is the England Euro 2021 squad announcement?

The Three Lions boss revealed his provisional 33-man squad at 1pm on Tuesday May 25.

Tuesday June 1 is the deadline for squad’s to be submitted and Southgate will announce his 26-man party at 5pm. The squad numbers will be detailed five minutes later before a live show featuring the manager and a player on the FA’s social media channels.

Southgate will face the press at 6pm to discuss his decision-making process ahead of the friendly with Austria on Wednesday June 2.

Who is in England’s provisional Euro 2021 squad?

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson, Sam Johnstone, Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Chilwell, Conor Coady, Ben Godfrey, Reece James, Harry Maguire, Tyrone Mings, Luke Shaw, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker, Ben White

Midfielders: Jude Bellingham, Jordan Henderson, Jesse Lingard, Mason Mount, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice, James Ward-Prowse

Forwards: Dominic Calvert Lewin, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Mason Greenwood, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling, Ollie Watkins

Which seven players are at risk of being cut from England’s Euro 2021 squad?

As per tournament regulations, Southgate has to name three goalkeepers. Jordan Pickford and Dean Henderson are certain of their spots while Sam Johnstones should get the nod ahead of Aaron Ramsdale for the third-choice role. Nick Pope required knee surgery which caused him to miss out.

A total of four right-backs and six centre-backs are in the provisional squad so expect the likes of Ben Godfrey and Ben White to drop out while Trent Alexander-Arnold’s place in under threat.

Jesse Lingard, Bukayo Saka and Ollie Watkins could also be among the group of seven not to make the final cut.

On the fitness front, Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire was only on the bench for the Europa League final due to an ankle ligament problem. However, club team-mate Mason Greenwood has been forced to withdraw due to an underlying injury. Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been absent since February because of a groin injury and has only recently resumed light training. Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips hobbled out of their final-day win against West Brom with a potential shoulder problem.

The unlucky players that miss out on the 26-man party could earn a late reprieve if any injuries or illnesses occur before the tournament.
