The winners of the 2021 Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester City will be presented with a commemorative golden oil drum, UEFA have revealed.
It will be the first occasion since 1967 that the victorious finalists have not lifted the distinctive Coupe des Clubs Champions Européens trophy.
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said the custom-made jewel-encrusted golden drum was an acknowledgement of ‘the significant role oil money has played in guiding both clubs to the final’.
Paddy Power News understands the drum will be handed to the final’s winning team captain by special guest and villainous oil tycoon J.R. Ewing.
Other VIP guests on the evening are set to include, George W. Bush, Tex Richman and the spectre of John D. Rockefeller.
“Both of these clubs have wonderful histories which date back as far as 2005,” Čeferin told PP News.
“Their recent feats are testament to what can be achieved through hard work, perseverance and spending £4 billion worth of oil money on the best players and coaches in the world.
“As a mark of respect for all that they’ve spent, we’ll be presenting the winner of this year’s Champions League final with a commemorative gold oil drum.”
The news was welcomed by both clubs as they look forward to the showpiece final on May 29th.
“To lift the oil drum in Istanbul would be a dream come true,” City owner Sheikh Mansour said.
When asked who he thought Man City’s toughest opponents were during this season’s Champions League campaign, Mansour added:
“Without doubt our hardest fought victory came in the Court of Arbitration against the Financial Fair Play Regulations.”
Should City emerge victorious from the all-English clash, it will be the 17th trophy the club has bought during Mansour’s reign.
