After becoming sick of clubs like Leicester hijacking their private party, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham have decided to create their own breakaway European competition.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid have also agreed to take part in the new ‘European Super League’.
Three more teams are expected to join the rebels, with plans to have five more invited based on their achievements. Presumably, these will relate to their performance on a balance sheet, rather than their overpaid players ballsing things up on the pitch.
Those involved in the breakaway will earn billions in revenue with the added benefit of guaranteed qualification no matter how rubbish they are.
They’ve even let Tottenham in. What madness.
Teams who join the breakaway still plan to play in their domestic leagues, which is jolly sporting of them.
There’s just one issue with that: UEFA says players who compete in the ‘ESL’ will be banned from the Premier League, other domestic competitions and even for their national teams.
Seems like a good time for Marcus Rashford to step up again and save the day again, doesn’t it?
With the ball rolling on the new money-grabbing Super League, our team of traders have been looking in their crystal balls at what could happen in the New Football World Order.
The likes of Everton, Leicester, Aston Villa, West Ham and Leeds could benefit from the ‘Big Six’ leaving the Premier League or being banned from playing in next season’s Champions League.
Brendan Rodgers’ Foxes look best placed to repeat their 2016 title win if the EPL decide to boot out their breakaway members.
And what about Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds? They get the first go at playing one of the ‘gang of six’ tonight when they host Liverpool at Elland Road, and are a good price to win the Premier League next season in the potentially radically different division.
West Ham – who are in danger of really upsetting the big boys by finishing in the top four this season – and Everton (who are not) might also fancy their chances of claiming top spot without the big boys.
And don’t worry if you’re sceptical of the new plans and don’t see it coming to fruition. We’ve got that covered too.
