Jamie Redknapp: I got told I’d never play football again the day Liverpool won the Champions League

It was heartbreaking, I'm not going to lie.

I often get asked about punditry and about the amount of work and research you have to do behind the scenes but I have to say, I don’t look at it as a job because I loved it. I watch football religiously.

You can go two ways I suppose. I retired at 31, got told by a doctor you’re never going to play football again.

It’s heartbreaking, I’m not going to lie.

It was the day Liverpool won the Champions League and so I had so much emotion of joy for the players, Stevie and all the boys that had won the Champions League, but also tears because I knew that was it for me.

The doctors told me if you carry on playing, you’re going to need a knee replacement in a couple of years.

That was all I needed to know. I was in America with Dr Steadman who is the best surgeon there is. That was it.

I’ve been so lucky. I’ve worked with brilliant people, a lot of passion there for the guys. The guys that I work with are different class.

I then got into A League of Their Own, which I love and people love it. The amount of Irish people that come up to me and say how much they love A League of Their Own.
