Football tips: Tackle our deadly 9/2 double for Sunday’s Scottish matches

Can Celtic get back on track after Old Firm defeat?

Aberdeen v Celtic: Aberdeen (+1)

It is surely a case of any win will do for Celtic after a disastrous week of home defeats. The going doesn’t get any easier for Neil Lennon’s men since Aberdeen away arguably represents the toughest fixture in the league for them outside of the games with Rangers.

This is a contest they can ill afford to slip-up in given the fact that they already have ground to make up in the title race, but it is a game that they will certainly struggle in. Aberdeen are unbeaten in their last four league ties, picking up 10 points and they have only lost once in their last nine games.

In fact, the Dons have only lost twice all season and have picked up 22 points from a possible 27 since their opening day defeat to Rangers. They sit just three points behind Celtic and are more than capable of inflicting further damage on the wounded giants, who will still be recovering from a difficult Europa League tie.

This is a dangerous fixture for Celtic, who have not looked themselves since the beginning of the season and they could give up more ground to Rangers in the early days of the title race.

PHIL THOMPSON: My 5/2 double for Sunday’s Premier League footy

Rangers v Livingston: Rangers (-2)

Rangers, in almost complete contrast to Celtic, have enjoyed a near-perfect week thanks to two impressive away wins. Their win at Celtic Park has now put them clear of the nine-time champions in the title race, even when Celtic’s game in hand is taken into account and their Europa League win at Standard Liege has set them up nicely to qualify for the knockout stages.

They surely head into Sunday’s fixture with lowly Livingston brimming with confidence. Livingston had been in reasonably good form prior to the international break – winning two games on the bounce. But, they came crashing down to earth with a 3-1 defeat at home to Kilmarnock last Saturday and will almost certainly be leaving Ibrox pointless on Sunday.

Rangers have been absolutely flawless at home so far this season, scoring 14 and conceding none on their way to five victories out of five. That goalscoring average indicates that Steven Gerrard’s side have an excellent chance of winning by three or more against a Livingston side that has failed to keep a clean sheet on the road this season.
