This looks a particularly hard game to call with significant question marks around the form of both teams.
With tiresome and unhelpful transfer sagas rumbling on, Manchester United have been pretty dreadful in both their Premier League outings, deservedly beaten 3-1 at Old Trafford by Crystal Palace before they were so fortunate to leave the Amex stadium with a win after Brighton clattered the woodwork on five occasions.
Meanwhile, Tottenham were outplayed by Everton and flattered by a 5-2 thumping of Southampton with the game pretty level based on expected goals.
However, Jose Mourinho’s side were unlucky in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle last week with Eric Dier’s very dubious late handball costing them a victory in a game where Spurs were fully deserving of it.
The fixture schedule also leaves Tottenham at a fairly sizeable disadvantage with Sunday’s clash being their fifth game in 11 days and Jose Mourinho elected to play a close to full strength side in Thursday’s 7-2 battering of Maccabi Haifa.
While public comments on injuries from Mourinho should be taken with a dollop of salt, it looks like Son Heung-Min will be absent with a hamstring issue and this game may come too soon for Gareth Bale’s second debut for Tottenham.
Given that, Harry Kane may be left a bit isolated up front with Mourinho’s options in attack including the flakey Lucas Moura who consistently flatters to deceive and Eric Lamela who is simply not good enough.
Mourinho will surely opt for Steven Bergwijn to trouble an extremely vulnerable United defence that really struggles against pacey forwards like the Dutchman.
Over 2.5 Goals
Great centre halves were a hallmark of Mourinho’s glory days with players like John Terry, Ricardo Carvalho and Lucio the backbone of elite defensive units.
This Tottenham defence are from an elite unit and have kept just two clean sheets in their last 27 Premier League away matches, with both of those results coming last season against teams who were eventually relegated.
United’s forward line is potent enough to seriously trouble Tottenham and I can’t see beyond lots of goalmouth action and Over 2.5 Goals.
