Football Tips: Our 3 best bets as Brighton seek revenge against Man Utd on Wednesday

Brighton must be kicking themselves that they came away with nothing from Saturday’s lunchtime Premier League kick-off against United and this fourth-round League Cup fixture affords them an immediate chance to gain revenge.

While Graham Potter’s men were desperately unlucky to come away with nothing, the result was also their own doing.

Leandro Trossard, who hit the post on three occasions, slammed a shot against the crossbar when one-on-one with David De Gea. That wasn’t unfortunate; it was poor finishing.

Trossard again poked a shot straight at De Gea when the goal was at his mercy late on, while Neal Maupay bewilderingly decided to lead with his arm while challenging for a header at the death, conceding the penalty that cost Brighton a point.

But there is no denying that they were lightyears ahead of United and deserved to win the game. Brighton will be smarting from Saturday’s defeat and they have an excellent chance of getting one over on United on Wednesday.

United’s strength in-depth is non-existent, as demonstrated by their starting XI against Luton last week.

If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decides to rotate ahead of a home league game with Tottenham, United will be vulnerable and Brighton can make them pay this time.

At the very least, they can avoid a second defeat in four days at the hands of the Red Devils so I like Brighton (+1) on the handicap.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh to score anytime

It would be a big surprise if Graham Potter went with the same front three that started against United on Saturday. Maupay, Trossard and Aaron Connolly got through a mountain of work at the weekend and the four-day turnaround may be too much for them, especially in this most congested of fixture lists.

That means that Iranian Alireza Jahanbakhsh is likely to start in the League Cup for the third round running, and he will be hoping that he can score for the third week running too.

Jahanbakhsh scored in Brighton’s two wins against Portsmouth and Preston and, judging by United’s defending in their two league games this season, he has an excellent chance of adding the Red Devils to that list.

He’s an outside bet to find the back of the net, but he’s good value and he is on something of a hot streak in the League Cup so Alireza Jahanbakhsh to score anytime looks nice.

Over 3.5 goals

If United and Brighton’s defending at the weekend is anything to go by, we could be in for a bit of a goalfest on Wednesday.

Brighton didn’t concede many opportunities, but they defended poorly for United’s three goals, committing the cardinal sin of leaving a centre back unmarked while defending the final corner of the game.

United, on the other hand, only conceded twice but could have easily shipped half a dozen such was the poor nature of their defending.

Graham Potter has rotated his defence for the League Cup, resting Lewis Dunk, Ben White and Adam Webster in both cup games so far.

Solskjaer will also rotate and, with so much inexperience in both defences, there will be mistakes. Even if the managers don’t rotate and play their best defenders, there will still be mistakes.

It should be yet another entertaining game on Wednesday night with Over 3.5 Goals.
