Chelsea v Liverpool tips: Watch as our trader picks a pair of top bets for Sunday’s big game

It's the game of the weekend - and here's what our trader Brian McDonnell is backing.

Liverpool got their Premier League title defence off to a shaky start but eventually saw off Leeds United in a thrilling 4-3 win at Anfield last weekend.

Jurgen Klopp’s men face another tough test this time around with a trip to big-spenders Chelsea on Sunday, and Blues fans will be hoping to see debut goals from summer signings Timo Werner and Kai Havertz.

Paddy Power trader Brian McDonnell is expecting the new arrivals to deliver and you can check out his best bets for the matchup at Stamford Bridge in the video below.

Over 3.5 Goals

This is the game of the weekend, for sure, and it will definitely be a cracker.

Both teams were involved in the only games last week where both teams scored. Liverpool weren’t at their best against Leeds with lots of individual mistakes and players weren’t as disciplined as they were for the majority of last season.

If you look at Trent Alexander-Arnold, he is usually very reliable but was beaten easily for Jack Harrison’s goal. Virgil van Dijk scored a goal but at the other end he was very sloppy in letting Patrick Bamford in and I thought Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane made the wrong decisions at times in terms of whether to cut the ball back or take shots on goal.

If they do have individual performances like that again, and if not all 11 players are fully at it, Liverpool could be vulnerable.

Recommended Reading:

Chelsea have obviously spent very big this summer, and Werner is just a goal machine. You could see his pace against Brighton and he is going to terrorise defences all season. Havertz didn’t have the best game against Brighton but players do take a bit of time to adapt to the league.

There are big question marks over Chelsea’s defence, as good as they are going forward. If you look at their defence, there are lots of question marks over Kepa Arrizabalaga and he was probably at fault for Brighton’s goal at the weekend.

The centre-back partnership of Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen can definitely be got at and I don’t think Thiago Silva is ready to come in this weekend.

As good as both teams are going forward, there is a bit to be desired at the back so I’m looking at the goal line for this game. Chelsea played Liverpool in one of the last games of the season a couple of weeks back and there were eight goals in that game.

I’m not expecting there to be eight goals in this game but Over 3.5 Goals is a nice price and I think that’s where the value is, rather than picking a winner for this game.

Timo Werner To Score Anytime

There are definitely loads of options when it comes to picking a goalscorer. Mohamed Salah is the obvious pick after his hat-trick last weekend. He’s the favourite at the top of the market but I would rather just go with Chelsea striker Werner.

We saw him at RB Leipzig last season, and he is just a goal machine. He didn’t get one against Brighton last week but I would say he will definitely have chances and he can break his Chelsea duck this weekend.
